AKAI DVPS-760 Firmware upgrade instructions

This firmware upgrade should enable you to play DVD-R discs.

Download new firmwareware    99ba.bin

This firmware is only for the loader version, A700BA11. Make sure your firmware matches the firmware requirement first. The way you can check the loader version is by pressing the setup button on the remote control. After you have the setup menu, press Vol +, then you will go into the loader screen. On the 5th line, where it says Sub Ver., make sure it says that you have A700BA11. If it says anything other than BA11, then you need to stop all procedure. This is only an upgrade for BA11 version.

Once you made sure that the loader version matches, you can then go ahead and burn the firmware onto a CD-R. Make sure to Label the CD , RMC_LDR_DOWN (important). Also, make sure that multi session is turned off, and in case you are using NERO Burning ROM software, make sure that ISO Level 1 is chosen, MODE 1 (under format) is chosen, ISO 9660 is chosen, Joilet is clicked, and finally finalize the CD, so no further data can be written on the CD-R.

Once the CD is burnt, Insert the CD in tray, it will do the update and eject the tray, and after few minutes it will take the tray back in automatically. If the upgrade was successful, the firmware version should say A700BA17 (go to setup and press Vol+)

I had to add a folder called karaoke to the "firmware" upgrade disk for the upgrade to work. Now I can play SVCDs that didn't work before this upgrade in firmware. Anyway that's what made it worked for me.

Making AKAI DVPS 760 Region Free

1. Open the disc tray
2. Push SETUP on the remote control.
3. On the remote control, push the following buttons:
X 1 0 1 0 (where X = your choice of Regions 1 through 9; Region 9 = BYPASS/REGION-FREE)

STEP SHUFFLE NEXT

4. There will be nothing shown on the screen as you perform Step 3.
You MAY be able to verify whether the region actually was changed by doing the following:

a) Open the disc tray
b) Push the following buttons on the remote control:

SETUP SHUFFLE STEP >|< NEXT >>|

This will reveal a "secret menu" screen.

5. Push the down-pointing arrow on the remote until the DEBUG menu appears.
6. If the check-mark on the right column matches the number you chose for "X" in Step 3 (your desired region choice), then you are done!
In the example illustrated above, "9" (Region 9) was chosen for "X" in Step 3.

THE DEBUG MENU DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO CHANGE THE REGION SETTING. IT ONLY LETS YOU CHECK THE REGION SETTING. YOU MUST PERFORM STEP #3 ABOVE IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE REGION SETTING.

NOTE: The firmware should be "RCE-proof", so selecting Region 9 should play ALL DVDs without problems, including RCE-encoded discs.
